How perform Salaah (Maliki)

How do we begin the salaat:

We start by saying Allahu Akbar and raising our hands level with our shoulders or ears.

Then we recite the Fatiha, which is the first surah of the Quran.

Bismillah hirRah’maan nirRaheem

In the name of Allah the most gracious the most merciful

Ar’Rah’maan nir’Raheem

maaliki yowmid Deen

possessor of the day of judgment

It is you alone we seek in worship and it is you alone we seek for help

ih’denaas siraatal Mus’taqeem

Guide us to the straight path

siraatal la’dheena an’am’ta alaihim ghraril magh’doo’bi alaihim wa laad daa’leen

The path of those whom you favoured and not the path upon which your anger was acquired.

Ameen

Now you can recite any portion of the Quran long or short. once you have done so then you say allowed Allahu Akbar and you go down into Ruku (bending over placing your hands on your knees)

while in ruku you say:

Subhana rabbi yal a’dheem

Glory of my Lord the most great x1, x2 or 3x

when you have done so then start to stand up again slowly and as you do recite:

sami Allahu le’man hamidah

Allah hears all who praise him

once you have reached a full standing position then you recite:

Rab’bana wa lakal hamd

Our Lord and to you is all the praise

once you have said this you say Allahu Akbar, then you go down into sajdah (prostration position with your forehead and nose touching the ground.)When you are in that position you say:

Subhana Rabbi yal AA’LAA

Glory of my Lord the most high 1x, 2x or 3x

Then you say Allahu akbar and sit up in a sitting position and say:

rab’big fir’lee

My Lord forgive me 1x, 2x or 3x

Then you say Allahu akbar and go back into sajdah and repeat:

Subhana Rabbi yal AA’LAA

Glory of my Lord the most high 1x, 2x or 3x

If you are doing another rakat then you stand up and repeat in exactly the same order. But if that was your second rakat then you remain sitting and recite the Tahiyya:

At-tahiyyatu Lillahi wa-salawatu wa’t-tayyibat, as-salamu ‘alayka ayyuha’n-Nabiyyu wa rahmat-Allahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu ‘alayna wa ‘alaa ‘ibad-Illah is-saliheen. ashhadu alla ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluhu

“All the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah’s slave and His Apostle.”

While you are reciting the tahiyya you will be moving your index finger backward and forward in a slow manner and this does not stop until you have finished

If you are doing a 3 rakat prayer or 4 then at this point you will stand up to continue to do your next rakat, if you are only doing 2 rakats like in fajr or in sunnah you will remain sitting and then go on to recite the Ibrahimiyya:

Allaahumma salli ‘alaa Muhammadin wa ‘alaa ‘aali Muhammadin, kamaa sallayta ‘alaa ‘Ibraaheema wa ‘alaa ‘aali ‘Ibraaheema, ‘innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allaahumma baarik ‘alaa Muhammadin wa ‘alaa ‘aali Muhammadin, kamaa baarakta ‘alaa ‘Ibraaheema wa ‘alaa ‘aali ‘Ibraaheema, ‘innaka Hameedun Majeed.

O Allah, bestow Your favour on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favour on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.

My Lord! Make me and those ˹believers˺ of my descendants keep up prayer. Our Lord! Accept my prayers. Our Lord! Forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the Day when the judgment will come to pass.

OR any other dua you care to make like

Our Lord give us in the worldly life the best and in the next life the best and protect us from the punishment of the fire!

This is the end of the salaah; to end the salaah you say: assalaamu alaikum turning your head to the right shoulder. Just one tasleem is required not two, and in the Maliki tradition we do not give a second tasleem to the left shoulder.
